Fort Knox
What a lot of people do not realize is that over time there has been more one Fort Knox in the US. One of these is in Prospect, Maine. This Fort was finished in the Mid 1800s just before the Civil War. It is also one of best preserved Forts from the era. To top this off, the public has access to almost the entire Fort. This makes this State Park officially papa’s favorite stop that we made during our 2023 trip.
The interior of the Fort was not very ‘accessible,’ so Richard did not get to see about 2/3 of the Fort in his ‘adaptive’ stroller. Mama (gladly) waited with Richard while Sidney and papa explored the interior of the Fort.
Sidney and papa had lots of great conversations about what life in that era and what it was like being in the Army during the Civil War. The Fort was one of the major ‘marshalling point’ where Union Army recruits assembled into units and got their basic training before being sent south to fight in the Civil War.
Although the fort was never completed, it was almost there.

Penobscot Narrows Observatory
Next to Fort Knox is Penobscot Narrows Observatory. It has a great view and shows the local area. We also got our best family selfie at the top of this tower. The Observatory was the first Bridge Observatory Tower in the US and the tallest public one.
