We started out our weekend by driving to Rhode Island from our campground in Carver, MA. Our first stop of the day was at the Old Slater Mill in Pawtucket, RI.
The Mill was the first industrial factory in the US. We started out by watching a short video about the history of the Mill and Samuel Slater.
We then got a guided tour of the Mill. It was amazing to learn about the history and get see one of the machines in action. We also learned about the industrial world of the era that was predominantly a labor force of girls, as they were the cheapest labor at the time. All the machines in the mill where design for 10 year old girl hands.
After the tour we explored the grounds. This is one of the newest National Historical Parks so the other two buildings on the Site where closed while they restore them and make them ADA accessible. We would love return to explore the rest of the building once they are open and the rest of the sites that make this National Historical Park.
