Dinosaur State Park, Rocky Hill, CT

Tuesday, August, 2nd 2023

We wanted to visit Wier Farm National Historical but it was closed on Tuesdays, so we visited Dinosaur State Park in Rocky Hill, CT instead. Sidney has been asking lots of questions about dinosaurs of late so it seem high interest for us.

We started out in the Museum. It was a very small museum but has lots and lots of hands on kids activities and we highly recommend it for any family that visits the area. The geodesic dome in the museum houses one of the largest concentration of dinosaur tracks on a single layer of rock anywhere in North America. It is the site of two thousand dinosaur tracks, discovered in 1966 and 1967. It is also referred to as a fossil trackway. It was really amazing to see.

We then went to the outdoor amphitheater and watched a presentation about the evolution of Sea life. Mama and Papa have been struggling with how to educate our children with a more balanced approach on Creation v Evolution than mainstream American Culture. We were very proud of Sidney who showed his excellent social skills and answered lots of her questions with the correct answers.

We then did a the short ‘family friendly’ hiking trail. We got to see lots of swampland, tress and a nice board walk but did not see much else.

On our way home we made a small side trip to visit Castle Craig in Meriden, Connecticut. There is a nice winding drive up a hill and around a lake to get to the highest point within 25 miles of the coast in New England. There are spectacular views with some great history. Sidney and papa tried to go to the top of the ‘Castle’ but Sidney did not make it all the way.
