Whaler National Historical Park & New Bedford, MA

Thursday, June 8th 2023

We decided to explore New Bedford, MA on Thursday, June 8 2023. New Bedford was the whaling capital of the world in its heyday. Herman Melville (author of Moby Dick) even wrote about the town of New Bedford.

We started at the New Bedford Whaling National Historic Park https://www.nps.gov/nebe/index.htm and Sidney started working on his Junior Ranger booklet. One page of the booklet is completing a scavenger hunt of items in and around the town.

Just getting started

We took the booklet and started searching. We also went to the New Bedford Whaling Museum https://www.whalingmuseum.org/ which was pretty cool and had different whale skeletons hanging from the ceiling, as well as a full-size whaleboat and a half-scale model of a whaling bark. There was lots of information about whaling through different cultures through the years and information about whales and other sea life.

We finished the museum, got some lunch at a cute Cafe around the corner. Then kept walking to finish our scavenger hunt.

Sidney liked his ‘pizza’ so much he wanted a picture

Once completed, we went back to the National Historical Park to turn in the Junior Ranger booklet. The Park Ranger came out, asked Sidney some questions about the booklet, then let Sidney wear his Ranger hat while he swore Sidney in as a new Junior Ranger. Sidney has completed quite a few different Junior Ranger programs but hasn’t had this level of officialness when completing. It was pretty cool.

After leaving the park building, we tried to visit the New Bedford Fire Museum but it was closed. We headed to Fort Tabor and Fort Rodman http://forttaber.org/ and explored the area for a little while. Most of the Fort structures were not well upkept and the inside access closed. There was a non-profit city-partnership museum on site which was an elaborate museum of local military history and memorabilia across many generations.
